Alternative Energy Stocks Closed Down as Dow Recovers

Alternative energy stocks closed mixed with a bias toward the downside despite the Dow recovering from its two day slide.  Renewed hopes of a consumer recovery ignited  by oil’s regained downward momentum overcame early inflation news. The Dow finished the day up .72% at 11,615.93 and oil dropped back to $114.80 as inventories continue to swell. Wind energy sector did better than most as advancers led decliners 5 to 2. Interestingly, 4 in this sector, JUHL, BWEN, AWNE and CPTC decided to sit today out and were flat at the end of the session.

Mass Megawatts Wind Power Inc (OTCBB: MMGW), one of the more volatile issues in the wind energy sector had another great day today closing up 6.7% at $2.07.  The stock hasn’t had a bad day all week and that’s saying something all things considered.

Kaydon Corporation (NYSE: KDN) also had a good day closing up 3.87% at $55.78.

Constellation Energy Group, Inc (NYSE: CEG) closed down 4.74% to $61.86 as it continues to run the gauntlet of bad news, as UBS downgraded their stock from Buy to Neutral on credit concerns. It appears that the Forbes article suggesting some questionable accounting practices may be having a lingering effect as well… despite our observation that Forbes is not highly regarded for impartial and unbiased reporting.

Nuclear energy stocks didn’t fare so well as decliners led advancers  7 to 4.

Uranium Energy Corp (Amex: UEC) got the nod for the “Best Performance by a Nuclear Energy Stock” by closing up 5.83% at $2.18.

Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), on the other hand, found its stock getting hit at the open then stayed even from that point on to close down 1.96% at $98.88.

NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG) gave back a little of what it gained yesterday as its stock closed down 1.68% at $35.22.

Solar energy stocks narrowly missed a winning day as decliners edged out advancers  9 to 8.

SunPower Corporation (Nasdaq: SWPR) is going to be a stock to watch for tomorrow. There stock finished basically flat despite news of the Largest Ground-Mounted Tracking System East of the Mississippi being installed by SunPower. Moreover, after the close PG&E announced it had signed a 250MW contract with SunPower. The stock is currently up nearly 7% in after hours trading.

China Solar and Clean Energy (OTCBB: CSOL) also had a strong day closing up 15.7% at $1.40.

Akeena Solar Inc (Naqsdaq: AKNS) was the biggest loser today as the stock closed down 3.12% at $3.73 followed by Canadian Solar (Nasdaq: CSIQ) which dropped another 2.94% to close at $28.70.

Geothermal stocks closed down but just barely as decliners nosed out advancers 4 to 3.

Calpine Corp (NYSE: CPN) had a respectable day as their stock moved up 3.87% to $16.36. Apparently the market greeted news of Secretary and Exec VP Gregory L. Doody’s termination as a good thing or at least not a negative development.

Despite PG&E’s (NYSE: PCG) announcements of major solar contracts, the company’s stock was overshadowed by selling and it ended the day down 1.28% at $39.21.

Lithium-ion stocks closed on the downside today, as decliners led advancers 8 to 5.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) had an awesome day closing up 10.63% at $11.35 as ot acted like a proud father by flashing around pictures of its stylish plug-in hybrid pride and joy Chevy Volt while reassuring the market that development of the car is on schedule for the November 2010 launch.

Valence Technology, Inc (Nasdaq: VLNC) was the next best gainer for the second day in a row as their stock closed up another 9.24% at $3.90.

Enova Systems Inc (Amex: ENA) on the other hand had a tough day as their stock slid 19.64% following the release of the company’s 2nd Quarter report showing revenues tripling and cost of goods doubling.

The Biofuel sector had a winning day today as advancers led decliners 5 to 2.

Valcent Products (OTCBB: VCTPF) was a top gainer among biofuel stocks advancing 9.26% to finish the day at $.59  while New Generation Biofuels Holdings Inc (Amex: GNB) managed to gain 5.85% to finish the session at $4.89.

The Fuel Cell sector closed narrowly to the downside as well with decliners edging out advancers 5 to 4

FuelCell Energy Inc (Nasdaq: FCEL) posted a respectable 1.8% gain to end the day at $7.92 while inviting the market to their Results Conference Call on August 28th.

Hydrogenics Corp (Nasdaq: HYGS0, on the other hand saw its stock lose 5.35% to finish at $1.23.
