Geothermal Stocks Lead the way as Alternative Energy Stocks Rise with the Dow Tide

Alternative Energy Stock sectors closed up across the board today as the Dow surged up 2.39% to close at 11397.56.  The rally was fueled by another $4 drop in the price of a barrel of oil which fell below $121 before closing at $122.19 and a slight increase in consumer confidence.

GEOTHERMAL STOCKS

Geothermal stocks saw wide spread gains as advancers led decliners 7 to 2.

US Geothermal Inc. (AMEX: HTM) closed up 9.05% at $2.41 after releasing more results on their newest well.

Calpine Corp (NYSE: CPN) was the other top gainer ending the day up 6.33% at $17.98 following their announcement that they have restarted their California Delta Natural Gas Plant.

Western Geopower Corp (CDNX: WGP.V) was up for about half the session then caved winding up 1.49% at $.33.

Nevada Geothermal (OTCBB: NGLPF) was the other issue that failed to find green closing down 0.92% at $1.08.

BIOFUEL STOCKS

The Biofuel was the weakest of the sectors only being able to eek out a tie with advancers matching decliners with 8 on each side.

The winners were led by Raven Biofuels Intl (OTCBB: RVBF) ending up the day up 14.63% at $.47.

W2 Energy (Pink Sheets: WTWO) followed close behind closing up 11.11% at $.05.

US Sustainable Energy (Pink Sheets: USSE) led the losers closing down 18.18% winding up under at penny at $.009.

Cyclone Power Technologies (Pink Sheets: CYPW) was close on USSE’s heels closing down 11.11% at $.24.

LITHIUM-ION STOCKS

The automakers all rose and most of the rest of the lithium-ion sector rose with them as advancers led declining issues by 10 to 4.  GM (NYSE: GM) led all automakers closing up 8.18% at $11.90 followed by Ford which rose 5.68% to end the day at $5.02.

The other big winner among the lithium-ion stocks was Electric Moto (Pink Sheets: EMOT) closing up 8.70% at $.025.*

Lithium Technology Corp was the biggest loser falling 8.24% to $.078.

FUEL CELL STOCKS

Fuel Cell stocks really showed their stuff as advancer led decliners 10 to 3.

Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG) led all the climbers winding up 14.55% at $2.44 following the release of their second quarter 2008 results.

Fuel Cell Energy (Nasdaq: FCEL) was next best closing out the day up 7.88% at $8.49. on lighter than average volume.

Pacific Fuel Cell (OTCBB: PFCE) led the decliners closing down 9.09% at $.03 followed by Sympowerco Corp (Pink Sheets: SYMW) which fell 4.55% to $.021.

SOLAR ENERGY STOCKS

Solar really shone today with advancers leaving decliners in the dust 15 to 3.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co Ltd (NYSE: YGE) led all the advancers closing up 12.53% at $16.53 following the release of their Second Quarter 2008 financial results.

Canadian Solar Inc (Nasdaq: CSIQ) was another big winner finishing today’s session up 11.85% at $30.48.

The big loser in the solar energy sector today was Conergy AG Hamburg (Pink Sheets: CEYHF) which fell 19.54% to $12.35 followed by Evolution Solar Corp (Pink Sheets: EVSO) which fell 7.69% to $1.80.

WIND ENERGY STOCKS

Wind energy stocks turned it around and made serious headway with advancers outpacing decliners 10 to 3.

Nacel Energy managed to regain some of its recent losses and finished the day at $1 even, up 7.53%.

Broadwind Energy Inc was another top winner moving up 3.65% on the day to $20.54.

On the downside, Kaydon Corp (NYSE: KDN) was so far ahead of the other losers, they aren’t worth mentioning as its stock took a hit closing down 13.66% following a pessimistic outlook released by the company for upcoming quarters.

NUCLEAR ENERGY STOCKS

The nuclear energy sector finally had another up day as advancers edged out decliners 7 to 4.

USEC Inc. led advancers closing up 4.04% at $5.67 followed by Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR) which ended the session up 2.55% at $109.59 following the release of their second quarter 2008 results with profits rising 1.3%.

Top loser was Uranium Energy Corp (AMEX: UEC) ending the day down 8.18% to $2.02.
